Gas Money Calculator: Split the Fuel Cost
Work out how much gas money each person owes. Enter the trip or the total you paid, list who was in the car and how far they rode, and the calculator splits the fuel fairly and the tolls and parking evenly.

Who was in the car
Everyone starts on the full trip. If someone joined for part of it, enter how far they rode and they pay for that part only.

How to split gas money fairly
The simplest fair split is to add up the fuel, tolls and parking and divide by the number of people in the car, driver included. That's what the calculator does when everyone rides the whole way:
When someone is only along for part of the trip, it's fairer to split the trip into stretches. Each stretch's fuel is shared by whoever was in the car for it. If you drive 300 miles and a friend rides the first 100, the first 100 miles are split two ways and the last 200 you pay alone.
Should the driver pay?
Among friends, the driver usually pays a share like everyone else. Some groups let the driver off because they also pay for the car's wear, insurance and their time. Untick Driver pays a share and the passengers cover the whole cost. Tolls and parking are always split evenly among the people paying.
Working out the fuel cost first
If you filled up after the trip, enter what you paid. Otherwise let the calculator work it out from the distance, the car's fuel economy (MPG or L/100 km) and the price per gallon or litre, exactly like our trip fuel cost calculator. Remember to count the drive back if you are sharing a return trip.
Tips for carpools and road trips
- Agree before you leave how you'll split it and whether the driver pays.
- Round up to make payment apps easier; the extra covers a coffee for the driver.
- For a regular commute carpool, work out the cost per trip once and use the same amount each week. The fuel cost per mile calculator helps.
