How to convert MPG to L/100 km
MPG measures distance per fuel (more is better); L/100 km measures fuel per distance (less is better). Because one is upside down compared with the other, you convert by dividing a constant by the number:
L/100 km = 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK)
km/L = 100 ÷ L/100 km
MPG (UK) = MPG (US) × 1.20095
The constants come from the exact unit definitions: 1 mile is 1.609344 km, a US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 litres.

Converting fuel prices between litres and gallons
Pump prices are quoted per US gallon in the United States and per litre almost everywhere else. To compare them, multiply a per-litre price by 3.785 to get the price per US gallon, or by 4.546 for an imperial gallon. A price of 1.80 per litre is 6.81 per US gallon. The converter above does the unit part; exchange rates between currencies change daily, so convert the currency separately.
Why the same car has three different numbers
A car rated 40 MPG in a British magazine, 33 MPG in an American one and 7.1 L/100 km in a German brochure is the same car. Only the units differ, and sometimes the test cycle (EPA in the US, WLTP in Europe and the UK). When you plan a trip, use whatever figure you have and choose its unit in the trip fuel cost calculator; it converts everything for you.
