About Calculate Trip Fuel Cost

Calculate Trip Fuel Cost is a free set of calculators for working out what a car journey costs in fuel, wherever you drive: in miles or kilometres, with US or UK gallons or litres, and in dollars, pounds or euros. It is made by GEMWEB, a small independent web studio. There's no sign-up, and your inputs stay in your browser.

How the calculations work

Every calculator converts what you enter to kilometres, litres and litres per 100 km, does the sum, and converts the answer back to the units you chose. That way any mix of units gives the same result.

fuel needed (L) = distance (km) × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100
fuel cost = fuel needed (L) × price per litre

Unit conversions

  • 1 mile = 1.609344 km (exact)
  • 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres (exact)
  • 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 litres (exact)
  • L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US) = 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK); km/L = 100 ÷ L/100 km

Results are rounded only for display. Electric car costs add the charging losses you enter (10% by default) on top of the energy the battery receives.

Where the prices come from

Each country's default petrol, diesel and (where available) electricity price is a national average from an official or widely used source, updated by hand:

  • United States: AAA's national average for regular gasoline; the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for diesel and the average residential electricity price.
  • United Kingdom: the government's weekly road fuel prices (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero) and the Ofgem energy price cap for electricity.
  • European Union: the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin for petrol and diesel, and Eurostat household electricity prices where shown.

See every country's price, source and date on the fuel prices by country page. Prices change every week and vary by region and station, so for the most accurate answer, enter the price you actually pay.

Accuracy

The arithmetic is exact, but the answer is only as good as the inputs. Real fuel economy depends on speed, traffic, weather, load and driving style, and is often a little worse than official figures. Treat the results as a good estimate for budgeting, not a guarantee.
